Bloomberg: Palm putting itself up for sale

This sucks. http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Precentralnet/~3/A1UY1rASO7w/bloomberg-palm-putting-itself-sale While we can’t say we’re completely surprised, we are still surprised. Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein has long advocated that Palm’s plan is to go it alone and that they had a path to return to profitability, but Bloomberg is now reporting Palm is putting itself up for sale. According to “three people familiar with the situation,” Palm is working with Goldman Sachs and Qatalyst Partners to find a proper suitor. Bids are expected to come in as early as this week. According to those sources, both HTC and Lenovo are keenly interested in acquiring Palm, and Dell had expressed interest, but has since decided against making an offer. As we would expect, all parties rumored to be involved have declined to comment, but if Bloomberg’s sources are to be believed, Palm’s days as an independent company might be over very soon. Thanks to everybody that sent this in!

The Apple iPad. The name is a killing word — more than a product — it’s a statement, an idea, and potentially a prime mover in the world of consumer electronics. Before iPad it was called the Apple Tablet, the Slate, Canvas, and a handful of other guesses — but what was little more than rumor and speculation for nearly ten years is now very much a reality. Announced on January 27th to a middling response, Apple has been readying itself for what could be the most significant product launch in its history; the making (or breaking) of an entirely new class of computer for the company. The iPad is something in between its monumental iPhone and wildly successful MacBook line — an usurper to the netbook throne, and possibly a sign of things to come for the entire personal computer market… if Apple delivers on its promises. And those are some big promises; the company has been tossing around words like “magical” and “revolutionary” to describe what many have dismissed as nothing more than a larger version of its iPod touch. But is that all there is to this device? Is the hope that Apple promises for this new computing experience nothing more than marketing fluff and strategic hyperbole? Or is this a different beast altogether — a true sign that change has come to the world of the PC? We have the definitive answers to those questions (and many more) right here, so read on for our full review of the Apple iPad! Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern Costume Is Snug In All The Right Places [Green …

When I read articles like this, it really sounds like they might be making this Green Lantern movie. *sigh* Sent to you by Chris via Google Reader: Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern Costume Is Snug In All The Right Places [Green Lantern] via io9 by Meredith Woerner on 3/8/10 Last night at the Oscars, Ryan Reynolds let slip a few superhero details about working on the Green Lantern film in New Orleans. Specifically about his Green Lantern Corps uniform, and how it hangs on his new superhero figure. [Ryan Reynolds’] trainer Bobby was telling me that you’re really really working hard in New Orleans. Everyday he turns me into a fine cottage cheese, curd-like pudding. That is for Green Lantern. But it’s worth it. The movie is going to be fantastic, so I’m really happy with it. What was it like when you put on the costume for the first time? Um, it ah snug. The costume is snug. It doesn’t leave a lot, uh, it doesn’t really camouflage too much. So it’s going to be interesting. Some people are probably interested in that. Yes maybe. I think that once I stop blushing, which will be about month three of production, it should all be equalized. It’s easier to teach compliance than initiative

Sent to you by Chris via Google Reader: It’s easier to teach compliance than initiative via Seth’s Blog by Seth Godin on 2/26/10 Compliance is simple to measure, simple to test for and simple to teach. Punish non-compliance, reward obedience and repeat. Initiative is very difficult to teach to 28 students in a quiet classroom. It’s difficult to brag about in a school board meeting. And it’s a huge pain in the neck to do reliably. Schools like teaching compliance. They’re pretty good at it. To top it off, until recently the customers of a school or training program (the companies that hire workers) were buying compliance by the bushel. Initiative was a red flag, not an asset. Of course, now that’s all changed. The economy has rewritten the rules, and smart organizations seek out intelligent problem solvers. Everything is different now. Except the part about how much easier it is to teach compliance. While Sprint may have been ready for webOS 1.4 since the 15th, actual roll-out of the OS hasn’t happened yet. That’s not too surprising - we’ve seen internal dates from Sprint slip in the past. But Palm promised a February release and time is quickly running out. A Verizon tipster has let us know that the ‘hard date’ for the rollout is going to be February 25th. As in updates past, the update will roll out to around 100,000 devices at a time. However, as in updates past once the update hits you’re free to launch the update app and download / install it yourself. webOS 1.4 is expected to bring video recording, compatibility with Flash 10.1 (though Flash 10.1 is definitely coming later), minor speed improvements, and that somewhat new way of launching a card you see above. We have also heard that webOS 1.4 will also finally turn on the LED alert by default, removing the need for a patch. Thanks Anonymous!

Well, it just wouldn’t be MWC without a few Bluetooth headsets to go along with the new phones now, would it? Thankfully, Jabra has come through with its new Clipper headset which, like Jabra’s BT3030, packs a standard 3.5mm jack to let you pair it with your own headphones (although Jabra also supplies a pair of its own noise-canceling buds). Otherwise, you’ll get some full, discreetly hidden controls on the clip itself, and a promised six hours of talk time and eight days of standby. No official word of a North America release just yet, but this one is expected to run £39 in the UK (or about $60).Jabra Clipper stereo Bluetooth headset gets official originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 15 Feb 2010 16:18:00 EST. Another big day at Toy Fair – Mattel held its Collector Preview Night and showed of the latest across its collector-oriented brands. I’m going to bite off a big chunk of that now with DC Universe Classics. There was a lot of DC product on hand, not even counting DC Infinite Heroes, Retro Super Heroes, Justice League Unlimited, and the Brave and the Bold, which will get their own update separately. For DC Universe Classics, we saw the 2-packs that are hitting now and the ones that are going to Wal-Mart, waves 13 and 14, and the start of an upcoming Wal-Mart Green Lantern 5-pack. Even though a lot of this has been trickling out via Mattel’s Facebook page or Toyfare magazine, there’s really no comparison to seeing these items up close. Hopefully I’ve been able to capture some of that for you here. Two-Packs We’ll start off easy here. The Kryptonite Chaos (Supergirl / Luthor) 2-pack was in hiatus for a long time but has now started hitting online retailers and sporadically at retail. The Dynamic Duo (Batman / Robin) and Undersea Assault (Aquaman / Black Manta) 2-packs will be exclusive to Wal-Mart. Some interesting tidbits we picked up – the Superman / Bizarro 2-pack will indeed feature Superman (and Bizarro) in a light blue deco – but that’s if the other 2-packs do well enough at retail to warrant refreshing the line. Also, remember the Golden Age Hawkman / Hawkgirl set that was solicited but never made it out? Toy Guru told us that it wasn’t due to retailers not wanting the hawks. On the contrary, he said that retailers are very comfortable with the character selections that Mattel has been offering. However, it was the number of 2-packs that caused the cut – retailers wanted fewer assortments and the hawks were the ones to get cut. And yes, the versions that were planned were the yellow cowl versions. Maybe they’ll make it back out some day. Wave 13 Wave 13 was on display both at the Mattel showroom and Diamond Comics Distributors, so I’ve included pictures from both displays here. I can only take it to mean that these are fairly well along in production and the unrelenting onslaught of DC Universe Classics will continue soon. We talked to Cornboy about articulation and what it means that Blue Beetle has got double elbows and knees. He said that we would see that articulation start to make its way into the line over time, as new bucks and tooling were introduced. Toy Guru represented the other side of the argument, commenting (though not specifically on these joints) that the bucks that Mattel has available right now covers pretty much everything they need. I think we’ll need a poll question soon on how you’d like to see the new articulation get phased in. I know there’s an uproar over the change to the modern Cheetah – Mattel folks didn’t comment on why the change was made, but I heard a few times from around the room that the costume was comic accurate, so why the outrage? I think she looks great. Negative Man also is very impressive in person. As for his variant, it’s a shame that it doesn’t photograph better – the translucent effect is really quite striking. Wave 14 (Wal-Mart Exclusive) There’s nothing like walking into a room that’s populated with DCUC 2-ups. Sure, we just saw these in striking detail in Toyfare magazine (the layout they used for their previews in issue was really superb), but getting to look at this Wal-Mart exclusive wave from different angles is nothing short of amazing. Ultra-Humanite was shown at actual size, not a 2-up, in case that wasn’t obvious. Borrowing some talking points from Hagop, my tag team partner at Toy Fair this year, Cornboy talked with him about the expressions for Alan Scott and Obsidian. With Alan, they decided to give him his expression because there’s so much reference art that show him that way. With Obsidian, they wanted to highlight his history as both a villain and a hero. As for Hourman, I wish I took more pictures. I know a lot of you want some black highlights on the mask – I really don’t think he needs it. My first impression was that he looked a little bland, but from different angles, he really looks fine. And speaking of head sculpts, Tyr’s really kicks ass. I am neither a Super Powers fanatic or a big Legion reader, but seeing Tyr up close has really swayed me. We also got the lowdown on some base bodies. Kamandi was based on Sinestro, but was given a new torso. So he’ll be teen-sized. Toy Guru and Cornboy were both happy to be getting some use out of the Sinestro buck – so while the rotoscoping that caused Sinestro to be undersized has finally yielded some dividends by giving Mattel a teenaged buck. However, those of you who are articulation nuts may be disappointed to hear that Zatanna will be using Black Canary legs. There was a lot of speculation that because of how the fishnets looked that they would be painted on. They’ll actually be separate stockings like they are on Canary – the feet are two pieces, so the fishnets go around the flesh-colored foot part and then plug into the shoes. Cornboy did tell us that they’ll be able to have fully articulated legs with fishnets in the future, but that didn’t happen for Zee. Also, her hat will be removable. Green Lantern 5-Pack (Wal-Mart Exclusive) To me, this is an example of Hurts So Good. While I’m dreading yet another item to hunt down at Wal-Mart, I’m just tremendously psyched for a Green Lantern-based set that will include Hal Jordan with graying temples, John Stewart in his Mosaic costume, Sinestro as a Green Lantern, and Guy Gardner and Tomar Re, who were on display in 2-up form. We asked a couple of times, and Toy Guru said that Sinestro would use the existing Sinestro head on the Hal Jordan body. We asked about other options like Deadman, but he said specifically that a Sinestro based on Deadman just didn’t look right. That’s the only question mark I’ve got here, because I think a Sinestro head on a Hal Jordan body would look more off than Sinestro on Deadman. The other choices I am psyched for. Hal with gray temples – while he’s not essential to my collection, there’s a lot of places I could use another Hal, and he’ll be a great custom base for more GLs. John in his Mosaic costume is just subterfuge for Mattel making amends for not putting John in his Cosmic Odyssey costume to begin with. Honestly, I’m a little embarrassed that I only managed to get one picture of Tomar Re. That mask isn’t just painted on – it’s a new head for him. And Guy Gardner – he was at the top of my list for Green Lanterns, and all of the new sculpted elements for him are just dead-on better than I could have imagined for him. When these hit, I’ll be asking you to keep a look-out for me! To wrap this up, just a little housecleaning on some rumors that have been circulating about upcoming waves. I’ve heard from a number of people that upcoming waves haven’t been solicited because the next wave is going to be another retailer exclusive. Toy Guru unequivocally said that Wave 14 is the only retailer-exclusive wave this year. There will be other SKUs that will be retailer-exclusives, but these will be things like 2-packs, not full waves of figures. Alright – that took me the better part of an evening, and I’ve just dented the surface. I’ll try to get Masters of the Universe Classics up tonight, but that’ll probably be it. If you’ve made it this far, thanks for reading!

Jim Fletcher was kind enough to give us a tour of the DC Direct showroom today. For this update, I’ll focus on the action figure products, or what I think of as Blackest Night and “everything else.” I’ll be sure to post pictures of the other products, mostly statues and busts, within the next few days. Blackest Night In case you’ve been living under a rock, Blackest Night is the hottest comic event to come out of DC since, well, probably since before I started reading comics. And DC Direct has latched onto this story like a Black Lantern ring latches onto a dead super hero. I’m not sure the last time we got multiple Wonder Women in a line (here as a Black Lantern and also as a Star Sapphire deputy) since she had her own action figure line – probably never. The real test is coming up soon – one of the waves is a Black Lantern-only wave, and this is the first time DCD has released a wave of action figures that didn’t have a hero in it. A strong partnership with the publishing arm of the business as well as Geoff Johns has made this line timely, and I imagine we’ll continue to get characters from the story as long as people are collecting them. Other Action Figure Lines It’s really not fair to lump these into a category, but DCD is all about being opportunistic with comic tie-ins as well as leveraging evergreen lines. In the former category, we’ve got New Krypton and Battle for the Cowl figures, and in the other category, History of the DC Universe, the refuse to die Alex Ross-styled figures, and the never-ending McGuinness- styled figures. DCD is also leveraging existing tools to bring us new one-off lines of figures. For example, with the DC Universe Origin figures that pair modern figures with their classic counterparts, DCD is using existing figures with either new heads, new metallic paint schemes, or some combination thereof. One other area DCD is pursuing is video game licensed figures. Mass Effect figures are coming, as are Dragon Age and Starcraft figures – most of these were still early on and not photographable. You’ll see when we post the statues and busts that they’ve got an Arkham Asylum Batman in the Black and White series. We asked both Jim Fletcher and Georg Brewer about the possibility for Arkham Asylum action figures. There was so much winking and nodding that I felt the urge to blurt out “say no more, say no more” in my best English accent. That wraps us up on action figures for DCD. I’ve got a ton of pictures of Statues and Busts, but those will have to wait until later in the week. Thanks for reading!
